Although published in 1991, Nash's book was the first general introduction to Vermeer's painting to make use of John Michael Montias social and economic history of the artist's family and patrons. Nash takes a thematic approach--rather than a painting by painting review. The result is a fresh perspective of Vermeer's extraordinary art. Out of print but one of the best books on Vermeer. Worth looking for.
